From Selma to Marvel

Even though there’s female characters in The Avengers, and Wonder Woman certainly got her due on television back in the ‘70’s, but many are still hoping there will be a major female superhero solo film soon. Wonder Woman’s in the works, with a female director to boot, and now the director of Selma is up to direct a Marvel flick as well.

According to Uproxx, Ava DuVernay is up to be the very first woman to direct a Marvel movie, and it could either be Black Panther or Captain Marvel. Clearly Marvel wanted a diversified touch, as well as a woman’s touch, for either the African American Black Panther, or the female Captain Marvel.

Funny enough, as Roxx tells us, Thor the Dark World was almost directed by Patty Jenkins, but Alan Taylor stepped in, and now Jenkins has stepped in to helm Wonder Woman after the original director, Michelle MacLaren, left the project.

DuVernay told HitFix she’s love to do a Marvel film, saying, “I know that I love to deconstruct heroes, deconstruct myths. I’d probably want to do some kind of origin store, where you get to the core of it before they get their powers.”

Of course, an origin story is what most people expect from at least the first superhero movie, we’d love to see more where they already have their powers (hello Superman and Spider-Man), and DuVernay would be an interesting choice to helm one, and going from Martin Luther King to Marvel could be an intriguing leap to take.
