The Hateful Eight: Better Movies Through Refrigeration?

When making The Exorcist, William Friedkin was famous for getting a restaurant air conditioner, making the set cold so you could see the breath of the actors. Apparently Tarantino’s taken a cue from Friedkin, because he’s doing the same thing on his next film, The Hateful Eight.

While the movie’s shooting in the cold of AREA, much of the movie takes place indoors, Samuel L. Jackson told Collider, “We were in the snow, at first, and then we get inside this room.” The refrigerated set was 30 degrees indoors, and as Jackson continues, “We were miserable in the environment.”

At the same time, in a day and age when you could give people ice breath with CGI, Tarantino used the Exorcist technique to make the actors uncomfortable, and so you could realistically see their breath.

The Hateful Eight, which stars Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Michael Madsen, among others, and is being shot in 70mm celluloid, should be hitting theaters some time later this year.
