Female Ghostbusters Director Adresses Early Critics

Ghostbusters is finally coming back next summer, but it’s not going to be your big brother’s ‘Busters by a long shot. In fact, it’s essentially going to be the Bridesmaids gang taking over the franchise, and of course we all know there will be critics no matter what.

Now Variety tells us that Paul Feig has addressed the critics at the SXSW (South By Southwest) Festival. Addressing the critics is often a pointless exercise, but Feig said, “The internet is really funny – I love it, but I hate it at the same time. The first wave when you make an announcement like that is overwhelming positive. Everyone’s so happy and you’re like, ‘This is great.’ Then comes the second wave and you’re like, Oh my God. Some of the most ville, misogynistic sh*t – I’ve ever seen in my life.”

The big comment that keeps popping up: “Thanks for ruining my childhood.” And as always, the geeks love to condemn things sight unseen, because they’re always dreading the worst, like Batman and Robin, and the Star Wars prequels.

Feig likes to look up Twitter profiles, expecting some pasty, doughy basement dwelling geek, “but almost constantly it’s someone who’s bio says ‘Proud father of two!’ And has some high end job. You’re raising children and yet you’re bashing me about putting women in my movie?”

We at TG are keeping our fingers crossed on this one. Ghostbusters definitely needs fresh blood, and a sex change, metaphorically speaking of course, could be an interesting twist. Often doing the unexpected can be just what a movie needs, like picking an against type director for a comic franchise, and we’re hoping the next ‘Busters will be an unexpected pleasure.
