Jake Gyllenhaal May Be Joining Suicide Squad

Even if you’re sick of hearing about superhero movies and superhero teams, we’re definitely hopeful for Suicide Squad, mainly for the fact that Jared Leto’s playing The Joker. Now Jake Gyllenhaal is apparently coming aboard, replacing Tom Hardy as Rick Flag.

As Cinema Blend reminds us, the movie’s being directed by David Ayer, the screenwriter of Training Day, and he directed Gyllenhaal before in the cop drama End of Watch. Hardy has to bow out because he’s now making a movie with director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Birdman), The Revenant.

Suicide Squad is supposed to start shooting in April, so they need to fill the role quickly. As Blend tells us, Will Smith will be playing Deadshot, Margot Robbie will be Harley Quinn, and Jai Courtney will be Captain Boomerang.

As we’ve reported before on TG, DC Comics is trying to play catch up with Marvel at the movies, and this could be their way of trying a superhero team (or in this case, super villain team) to compete with The Avengers. The Joker will of course be a big selling point, but I’m also looking forward to seeing Harley Quinn come to life on the big screen as well.

Suicide Squad will be hitting theaters in 2016.
