Keeping Star Wars Under Wraps

It’s currently a little over a year before we have the new Star Wars movie in theaters, and as we’ve reported many times before, keeping anything a secret on it has to be nearly impossible in this day and age, although knowing JJ Abrams, he’ll certainly do his best.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Disney tried to get a drone shield, made visitors put tape over their cell phones, and there were even people in trees trying to get any scrap of information.

The Reporter wrote that a pilot took a picture of the Millennium Falcon, not realizing what it was from the air until he looked at the photos several days later. And indeed, drones were used to try and capture anything going on with the Star Wars shoot.

As the Reporter continues, JJ Abrams has done a lot of practical scenes that didn’t need to be created in post-production, which upped the risk of somebody capturing pictures. Chris Taylor, the author of How Star Wars Conquered the Universe, has called the secrecy surrounding the film a “culture of terror,” and “completely Orwellian.”

We all knew this was going to happen, and we’re not surprised that the secrecy on this film has been completely nuts. It’s Star Wars after all, but sooner or later we’ll have official stills and footage, maybe even a teaser trailer before the end of the year or early next year. After all, they can’t keep it a secret forever.
