We’ve been hearing so much about the end of the world lately, especially with all this talk about the Mayan calendar, which predicts the world will end on December 21.
But the end of the world’s been pronounced many times before, and it’s sure to be again. Sure, there was all this talk of the end of the world last year on May 21, and guess what? We’re still here, and should continue to be for a long time to come.
Recently, the news hit the Associated Press that experts have gotten together in Mexico to discuss the infamous Mayan calendar prophecy that many, including George Lucas apparently, feel will come true.
Interestingly, the group of archaeologists and anthropologists have concluded that the Mayan calendar may have been misinterpreted, perhaps in an effort to try and get people not to panic.
As archaeologist Alfredo Barrera told the AP, "The Mayas did make prophecies, but not in a fatalistic sense, but rather about events that in their cyclical conception of history, could be repeated in the future."
Experts have also told the AP that there’s only two references to the year 2012 carved in stone at Mayan sites, and they don’t point to the end of the world.
Of course, there have been a lot of recent efforts to try and convince people that zombies really don’t exist, and we don’t need to stock up our bunkers in case they take over. We’ve covered this several times on TG, and we also reported on an amusing Amazon.com list, where someone documented everything you need in case of a zombie uprising.
In fact, the site GiantFreakinRobot just reported that Nathan Fillion, who played Captain Mal on Firefly, learned how to weld because, he said, “One of my hobbies is zombie apocalypse preparedness. When the zombie apocalypse happens, ‘We need to somehow fortify this SUV so we can go and the zombies can’t get in. Can anybody here weld?’ That’s gonna be me.”
As far as zombie apocalypse preparedness, I say it sounds like fun to me, as long as you treat it like fantasy baseball, and aren’t seriously bracing yourself for the undead to take over.
