Surprise, surprise: boys who watch porn have crap relationships

Boys who watch porn are more likely to think sexual harassment is acceptable and less likely to form successful relationships when they get older.

Michael Flood, who carried out a study at the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, studied porn consumption and attitudes to women in over a dozen countries.

He found that exposure to porn among children was widespread, and that they often found it disturbing or upsetting. It also led to 'sexist and unhealthy' ideas about relationships.

"Especially among boys and young men who are frequent consumers of pornography, including of more violent materials, consumption intensifies attitudes supportive of sexual coercion and increases their likelihood of perpetrating assault," he says.

While it's important to recognise that it's natural for young people to experience sexual feelings, he says, "Pornography is a poor, and indeed dangerous, sex educator."
