Looks like those Christmas stockings are going to be a bit on the empty side this year: sales of both games and consoles fell in November, usually a peak buying time.
US sales fell 7.6 percent for the month, says NPD, down to $2.7 billion. This is despite the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which sold a stonking six million copies - a quarter of all games sales for the month.
The Nintendo Wii was the most popular console, selling 1.26 million units - although this was 38 percent down on the same month last year. Microsoft's Xbox followed, with 819,000 units shifted, about the same as last year.
The recent cut in the price of Sony's PlayStation 3 had the desired effect, with sales up 88 percent from November last year to 710,400.
The games rankings show Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in the top two spots, for the Xbox 360 and PS3 respectively. Next come New Super Mario Bros Wii, and Assassin's Creed II for the Xbox 360. Left 4 Dead 2 for the Xbox 360 and Wii Sports Resort follow.
