Wii takes top spot in March

  • Port Washington (NY) - Nintendo has scored a hat trick with the first three months of 2007, nabbing the title of top-selling next-gen home console in January, February, and now March.  NPD this week released its sales figures for last month, with the Wii 60,000 units ahead of its nearest competitor.

About 259,000 Wii systems were sold in March, according to NPD.  The Xbox 360 still has momentum, though, with 199,000 units purchased during the 31-day period.  The PS3 clocked in with 130,000.

The rankings are the same as January and February.  Because the Xbox 360 has been in retail for a year longer than its competitors, it still holds the most market share, but continued strong sales for the Wii are causing to Nintendo to close the gap.

In the handheld market, The DS is still going strong, with more than half a million units sold during March.  The PSP sold about 180,000.
