Sony planning video downloads for PS3

  • Culver City (CA) - The introduction of the video marketplace on Xbox Live proved to be very successful, and Sony is working on a similar service with the PS3, according to a recently published interview with Sony's worldwide studios president.

    In an interview with
, Phil Harrison talked about the Xbox video download service and said, "We have a hard drive, we have a commerce engine, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out we will have that on the network very shortly."

Currently on Xbox Live, movies and TV shows are only available on a rental basis, meaning users only have access to the content for 24 hours after they open the file. With such a big hard drive in the premium version of the PS3, the potential of download-to-own videos is opened up.

Media reports have speculated that, like Microsoft's platform, Sony would offer videos in both standard and high definition.

Currently, the PS3's digital Playstation Store offers casual downloadable games, PS3 game demos, and emulated versions of classic PSOne games that can be transferred to the PSP, as well as game and movie trailers.
