Will Audiences Have Any Need For Speed?

We’re still a ways away from a truly great video game movie, if it’s ever going to arrive, and good, bad, or indifferent, the big screen adaptation of Need For Speed is arriving in theaters this March.

Having seen a few random clips, it looks like another Fast and Furious movie, and there’s nothing that would give you the impression it came from a video game. Perhaps this was the intention, but we’re hoping that with the next video game movies to come that there will at least be some technological aspect that could be cool for geeks and gamers.

In the featurette on the film (see  below), Need For Speed is called a story of “revenge” and “redemption,” along with “two hours of adrenalin pumping madness,” just like thirty billion other Hollywood movies. And even with Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad, as well as Dakota Johnson, who will star in Fifty Shades of Grey, there isn’t anything we’ve seen so far that doesn’t feel standard issue.

In the meantime, we’re about two years away from the World of Warcraft film, and if it’s done right, it could be pretty insane stuff. Whether Need For Speed succeeds or fails, we don’t think it’s going to help or hurt any upcoming game movies, it should pretty much be a blip on the radar.
