It’s been common knowledge since the Disney Star Wars deal went through that along with three more chapters in the saga, there will also be spin off films. Yoda, Boba Fett and Han solo films have been rumored, and now the talk of a Han Solo solo film have been gaining a little credence.
Giant Freakin Robot tells us that this talk got stirred up recently by Jay Rasulo, the CFO of Disney, and that the Han Solo film could be in theaters by 2016. If it’s a hit, the Yoda and Boba Fett films could follow in 2018 and 2020. Joss Whedon has his hands full with the Avengers, but he recently hinted he’d love to do the Boba Fett film, telling Entertainment Weekly it’s a “tasty morsel,” but he probably didn’t make this comment very seriously.
The spin off films would come in-between the regular Star Wars installments, which means that Episodes VIII and IX will probably come out in 2017 and 2019 respectively. The spin off films will also reportedly all be origin stories.
The spin off films will be working with smaller budgets than the regular series, and it would be interesting to see what can be done in the Star Wars universe with less resources than usual. As Giant Freakin Robot points out, a $200 million budget is no guarantee of quality, and like Orson Welles once said, the absence of limitations is the enemy of art.
