Could Takashi Miike Give Hunger Games a Bloody Run For the Money?

Everybody pretty much knows about the Hunger Games, but not many people may  know about director Takashi Miike, other than his movies are very bloody, and the movie Ichi the Killer was the visual inspiration for The Joker in The Dark Knight.

Takashii Mike’s movies are known for being balls-out brutal and violent, and now Variety tells us he one-upping the Hunger Games in his next film, As God Says. This movie will be based on a popular comic (over 1.5 million copies sold) which has the familiar story line of teenagers being forced to fight to the death. The film is being made through Toho, the home of Godzilla, and is being slated for release in the fall of 2014.
We often say at TGD that the Hunger Games is Battle Royale light, and I’m a big fan of Royale, but the first time I saw it I remember saying to myself, “There’s no way this movie could have been released after Columbine.” It’s also obvious that anything that has extreme violence against kids is still a big no-no, even for the most hardcore of filmmakers.
Yet as Miike told Variety, in As God Said, “They live, some heads roll, they run, blood sprays, they cry, they laugh and then they die – in other words, a fun movie.” Couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
