World of Warcraft Movie Blinks, Gets Out of the Way of Star Wars

After months of speculation, the new Star Wars finally has an official release date, December 18, 2015. Usually the Star Wars movies come out on Memorial Day, but now Disney will be breaking tradition and will give us a new Star Wars for Xmas two years from now.

This has caused a big potential problem for the World of Warcraft movie, which was set up for release on the same day. Yet we had a feeling World of Warcraft would move out of the way, and it has indeed moved to early 2016.

As the Hollywood Reporter tells us, Universal has reset World of Warcraft for March 11, 2016, which is a smart move because there’s no way any studio is going to release their movie on the same day as Star Wars, unless they want to lose a lot of money in a hurry. (Universal’s reboot of The Mummy will also get a 2016 release date on April 22.)

One movie that will be standing against Star Wars a week after its release is Mission: Impossible 5, which will come out on Christmas day 2015. At the same time, we wouldn’t be surprised if Mission: Impossible 5 gets another release date, because win, lose or draw, Star Wars will absolutely be a box office juggernaut that should crush everything in its path. Even if World of Warcraft winds up a great movie, it’s still smart to get out of the way.
