The Console Wars Are About to Begin

We all know that new technology can have a huge impact on our lives. Think about what our lives were like before and after the VCR, home computers, e-mail, and the internet. Now new gaming consoles are about to hit the market, and two rival companies, Sony and Microsoft, are about to do battle for your Xmas dollar.

As the L.A. Times reports, Sony’s bringing out PlayStation 4 on Black Friday the 15th, and Xbox One will come out a week later. PlayStation 4 costs $399, and Xbox 360 will cost $499. As the Times tells us, Sony is marketing PlayStation to hard-core gamers, and Microsoft is trying a broader marketing approach for Xbox.

According to the Times, gamers are antsy for both consoles, and up to five million units could sell before the end of the year. The current figures also tell us that more than half the homes in the United States have game consoles, and that gamers have spent close to $20.8 billion on games, hardware and accessories in 2012.

There’s a much wider audience of gamers today, and many predict that consoles will be selling like mad this holiday season. It’s not clear who could come out the winner, but Sony has a $100 discount advantage over Xbox.

We at TGD will definitely be watching how games will sell this holiday season as well. Once everyone gets their new consoles, we expect game sales to similarly explode, much like we saw Call of Duty and Halo 4 break all records last year. Gaming is an up and down market, and it’s hard to predict where things can land, but for this holiday season it looks like things should definitely be on the up and up.
