Why Dexter Couldn’t Die

When Dexter finally came to an end, a lot of fans weren’t happy about how it ended. The show had a good run for sure, but a lot of people very disappointed in how it all ended up.

Now the news has hit that Dexter was not allowed to die, according to Showtime dictate. The fans would have loved to have seen Dexter finally meet his end, but as Variety reports, it was no go.

John Goldwyn, a producer on Dexter, told Vulture, “They won’t let us kill him. Showtime was very clear about that. When we told them the arc for the last season, they just said, ‘Just to be clear, he’s going to live.’”

Goldwyn added, “People have a relationship with Dexter, even if it doesn’t have the size and the ferocity of the fanbase for Breaking Bad. But it has a very core loyal following.” Loyal enough that it reacted in disgust when the end of the series didn’t deliver.

Some characters in movies and TV shows should die. It’s just the only way to logically bring everything to an end. If it has to be part of the story, trust us, it won’t alienate the fans, especially if it’s destined for that character to meet their end. Many fans wanted to see Dexter die, and as much as Showtime insisted he stay alive, it left much of Dexter’s following feeling shortchanged.
