This month going into April is really going to be amazing for fans of genre TV. The Walking Dead is wrapping up Season Three, Revolution has started up again, and the third season of Game of Thrones is hitting screens on March 31.
The show’s popularity is still growing strong and steady, and early word on season three is it’s a winner, perhaps the best yet.
The Daily Beast headlined its report on Season Three, "Game of Thrones Got Even Better," and Jace Lacob has also written that this season of Thrones "is the best – and most complex - one we’ve seen yet." That has to be music to the ears of Thrones fans, who welcome complex storylines over a long arc that you can’t get from traditional TV or movies.
As Lacob writes, "Unlike most fantasy stories, Game of Thrones presents a complex morality that is far more nuanced than simply the forces of good vs. evil," and that’s what so many love about Thrones. It’s not strictly black and white, and the show offers a lot of interesting shades of gray all around.
As the Beast reports, "The show’s executive producers [David Benioff and D.B. Weiss] have proven largely capable of shifting content, paring it down, and inventing new material in order to make the narrative fit within the confines of a weekly television series."
This season, which is based on A Storm of Swords, takes a while to get going, much like the novel its based on, but once it gets going, "It soars – particularly in the sensational third and fourth installments, ‘Walk of Punishment’ and ‘And Now His Watch is Ended.’"
We’ve all seen shows that stayed too long at the party and should have bowed out gracefully before things got embarrassing.
Thankfully that hasn’t happened with either The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones, and it’s great to see a show firing on all cylinders well into its run. Not an easy feat to pull off, but it’s great when showrunners like Benioff and Weiss keep delivering, and it looks like fans of Thrones are in for another incredible season.
