On the eve of Star Trek Into Darkness

We’re still a few months away from the May 17 release of Star Trek Into Darkness, and even with everything tightly under lock and key, there’s still reports slipping out here and there on the movie.

It’s hard to think of a movie hitting theaters this summer which has higher anticipation, and we’re just as curious as anybody else to see the final product when it’s finally ready to screen.

There’s of course been much speculation as to who the villain really is, and as of this writing, we’ll assume it’s still this guy John Harrison, not Khan. The bad guy in this Trek is being played by Benedict Cumberbatch (how’s that for a moniker?), and recently he and JJ Abrams talked a little bit about Harrison for Total Film and Collider

But before we go into the Trek bad guys, the news also just broke that Into Darkness will get an earlier release in the UK before it hits the US. As Deadline tells us, Darkness will come out on May 9, where it will come out in IMAX 3D, regular 3D, and regular 2D. Also don’t forget you can see it two days early in IMAX format in the States on May 15.

In comparison to Nero, the villain in the first Abrams Trek film, JJ said that Nero “was just a raging, vengeful lunatic. All he wanted to do was destroy Vulcan, Earth and the Federation…He had backstory but was kind of irrational. The beauty of [John Harrison] is that he’s completely rational. He’s someone that you can have conversations with. You couldn’t sit down and talk to Nero – he’d bite your head off!”

Cumberbatch also added that like many actors before doing a big action flick, “I did a lot of close combat training. He’s a kick-ass warrior, as masterful with his hands and body as he is with weapons.” He also promised, “You will have a great discovery during this film, which I think is great.”

Yes, we’d all love to know whether the next Trek is a winner before Abrams jumps over to Star Wars. Be patient Trekkies, we’re almost there, just a little over two months now. In fact, Simon Pegg, our new Scotty, just tweeted it’s “about 8 weeks away” from the UK opening. “Not long considering.”
