Towards a Wreck It Ralph sequel

With the success of Wreck It Ralph, a sequel would be a given. It’s also the kind of movie that has huge franchise potential, which is what studios look for all the time. So will there be a Wreck It Ralph follow-up hitting theaters anytime soon?

And what could be really exciting, as ScienceFiction.com reports, is director Rich Moore is thinking of doing something in a similar vein to Toy Story 2. If it could be on the same level of a Toy Story sequel, that would indeed be great, but it’s one particular segment that’s intrigued Ralph director Rich Moore.

As Moore said, he was recently talking with John C. Reilly, the voice of Ralph, and the idea would be to have Ralph meet other incarnations of himself, much like Buzz Lightyear came in contact with other Buzz toys in Toy Story 2. “Are there other Ralphs?,” Moore pondered. “What would happen if another ‘Fix-It-Felix, Jr.’ game were plugged in? Are there other Ralphs that are more contemporary? Is there another version of the game that was made for mobile?”

That right there is an intriguing concept: The old 80’s version of Ralph meeting up with the modern day incarnation of Ralph. I like the sound of that. Yet as ScienceFiction.com notes, a sequel to Ralph hasn’t gotten the greenlight yet, but don’t be surprised if we see one down the road, especially considering Ralph made $187 million domestic, and $435 million world-wide.

To the Miami Herald, Moore also gave a lot of the credit of Ralph’s success to Reilly, who’s one of the best character actors around. Reilly at first wasn’t sure about voicing a cartoon. “John said he’d heard that actors just go into a recording booth and put on headphones then act against nothingness. He said, ‘That doesn’t sound like fun to me to be really honest. I don’t think you’re going to get my best work doing that.’”

Moore then decided to have the actors interacting with each other in the same room. “Ultimately, it made the movie much, much better than they were able to see each other and look into each other’s eyes and play off each other’s faces.”

Wreck It Ralph is already out on DVD and Blu-ray, where its sure to add even more money to the movie’s coffers. It seems foolish to pass up a sequel to one of the best reviewed animated films in years, and it shouldn’t take a psychic to predict more installments of Wreck It Ralph down the road.
