Amazing Spider-Man 2 begins filming

When it was announced that Spider-Man was going get the reboot treatment, many geeks, myself included, were skeptical.

Who could blame us? Spider-Man 3 just didn’t cut it, and having to redo it all over again just didn’t feel right at first. Too many remakes out there as it is, you know?

But The Amazing Spider-Man did pass the test with audiences and reviewers, even though there was a sense of, “Didn’t we see this movie before?”

Now The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is officially shooting right now, and Sony has released an official synopsis. Before we go into the basic storyline though, in case you haven’t been following the developments with the film, there may be two villains in the film this time around.

In addition to Electro, who will be played by Jamie Foxx, Spider-Man will also do battle with The Rhino, who will be played by one of the best character actors we have, Paul Giamatti. As the Huffington Post tells us, Giamatti said several years ago that the Rhino was actually his favorite Spidey villain.

“I thought it was the greatest thing when I was a little kid. It was a guy who was basically in this rhinoceros outfit and I always thought, why don’t they have the Rhino in one of their movies…If they ever go with The Rhino, the Rhino would be great.” Now Giamatti may actually have his wish, and although the Rhino is not known for being very bright, he’s quite strong and fast.

As for the official Sony synopsis for Spider-Man 2, it reads, in part: “For Peter Parker life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen, high school graduation can’t come quickly enough.

“Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new Villain, Electro emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn, returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.”

No mention of the Rhino here, or what he could be doing in the story, maybe they’re setting him up for a future chapter, but one villain should be plenty for Spider-Man to take on if they decide to cut back on the bad guys. Look for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in theaters on May 2, 2014.
