Jurassic Park 4 is a go

There have been rumors about a fourth Jurassic Park movie for quite some time now.

Indeed, there was a lot of talk about another Park picture, as well as reports that it would be in 3D. Not to mention there’s still enormous enthusiasm for another Jurassic Park film as the original is hitting its 20th anniversary this year.

Well, as Collider now confirms, a fourth Jurassic Park is officially a go, and it’s currently got a release date of June 13, 2014. As the site also points out, this gives the powers that be less than 18 months to get the film made, which considering this is a big blockbuster with tons of effects in 3D, it sure won’t be easy. There’s also currently no cast or director in place either.

This April 5, 2013, we’ll also have the 3D conversion of the original Jurassic Park hitting theaters, and love it or hate it, 3D is still a crucial element a blockbuster needs to play overseas. Guillermo Del Toro had to convert his upcoming sci-fi epic Pacific Rim to 3D or it won’t get played in China, and JJ Abrams also recently confessed he had to make Star Trek Into Darkness in 3D or it couldn’t get made.

Spielberg told Moviefone, "The only movie that I would ever even consider retrofitting is the first Jurassic Park. I think it would look pretty spectacular in 3D." Yet with Jurassic Park 4 of course, the movie’s being made in 3D from the get-go.

3D or no 3D, the biggest hurtle for the next Jurassic Park was the screenplay, which was written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the team that also gave us Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Apparently the script was turned in to Universal this week, and it passed the test.

As Kathleen Kennedy, who produced the original Jurassic and is now running the Lucas empire, told Collider, "We have a very high bar for ourselves because we’re just like the audience. We don’t want to make the movie if there’s not a reason to make the movie."

The first Jurassic Park, like Raiders of the Lost Ark, is still the best in the series, and probably always will be. That said, let’s hope that in trying to top the original that the makers of Jurassic Park 4 can still come up with a pretty good movie regardless.
