Yes, female Colonial Marines will battle aliens

The original Alien film was considered a bold film for making Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) the action hero-protagonist.

With the sequel, James Cameron made Ripley an even stronger action heroine, facing down her worst nightmare yet again, and becoming a protective surrogate mother for a young child.

As fans of Cameron's work are well aware, he's always had strong women in his films, which is why it's odd that it took some online complaining to get more women in the game Aliens: Colonial Marines.

As Cinema Blend tells us, female gamers weren't happy about the lack of female marines in the game, and a gamer who goes by the name Melissa K rounded up the troops to protest the title which is being released via Gearbox.

In one internet missive, she wrote, "This is unacceptable for a game that makes such claims as are listed on its official website, made after a film franchise that has many strong female characters like Ripley, Vasquez, Ferro and Dietrich to name a few. There is roughly 5-6 months before the game goes Gold and releases February 12, 2013 so we need to let them know NOW that they are not being true to the Aliens universe by not including the ability to play as a female in Multiplayer."

Then Melissa K got a petition going which got 4,000 signatures, and Gearbox listened, finally putting women in the game.

Gearbox president Randy Pitchford saw fit to add, "I want everybody to be clear that there are playable females in both the multiplayer and the campaign. We realized some people were starting to feel bad. We exist to entertain people."

In recent times we've also absolutely seen an increase in female gamers, and as MCVUK reports, "The core demographic of the established industry remains very much in the 15-30 year old male bracket, the increasingly broad catchment of gaming has seen non-traditional demographics penetrate further into core sectors."

Again, Aliens: Colonial Marines goes live on February 12, 2013, and whether you're a male or female gamer, you should have enormous fun blasting aliens away.
