Unplugging: Resurrecting Repo Man
The spirit of Alex Cox’s 1984 movie Repo Man will be resurrected with a tribute album, set to be released September 9th, 2012.
The film’s original soundtrack captured the SoCal punk movement of the '70s and '80s, featuring material from Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Suicidal Tendencies, The Plugz and Iggy Pop.
The upcoming tribute album will feature Those Darlins, Matthew Sweet, Amanda Palmer, Mike Watt, The Tellers, Black Francis, Weekend, Polar Bear Club, Moses Coltrane, New York Rivals, and The Suicide
Dolls. Pre-ordering options are available, as well as a limited-edition special bundle that includes a 6-panel CD, eco-wallet, t-shirt with an original design by Lonny Unitis, 2 promotional pins and a recreation of Little Trees’ royal pine tree car freshener.
With print media becoming more and more sparse, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that SPIN Magazine’s parent company, SPIN Media, was sold to a music/celebrity-affiliated company, Buzzmedia.
With most of their readers lost to the Internet, SPIN has struggled with a recession of their print edition’s circulation. It hasn’t yet been disclosed how much SPIN was purchased for, although we probably can compare it to the approximate $5 million mark paid for the purchase of SPIN by previous publisher McEvory Group in 2006.
Now, Buzzmedia has taken reign over SPIN’s print magazine, website, iPad app and live event business, with plans to expand their digital staff so as to increase their online reach. Buzzmedia owns and sells advertising for well-known music blogs like Stereogum, Hype Machine and Idolator.
The company also operates websites affiliated with celebrities, as well as possessing potential access to major advertisers such as Apple, Honda, Ray-Ban and Anheusner-Busch Inbey.
The popular headphone manufacturer, Beats Electronic, founded by HTC, Dr. Dre and Interscope Records Chairman Jimmy Jovine, has acquired the music subscription service, MOG. This merger is considered to be the commencement of a new, hybrid service between the two companies.
Beats Electronic reportedly paid $14 million for MOG. The popular music service garners 500,000 active users, proving to be tight competition for other subscription services like Spotify. Thus far, the plan seems to be to mesh and integrate Beats’ product with MOG’s music services.
This week The Railroad Revival Tour announced its 2012 lineup for their unique, eight-show tour. Starting October 20th in Duluth, Georgia and wrapping up in Oakland, California, the Revival Tour will feature the likes of Willie Nelson, Band of Horses, John C. Reilly, Jamey Johnson and many more.
A completely different take on a music festival, the Railroad Revival Tour reawakens the magical, old-timey connection between trains and music. Featuring antique 1940s railcars, the tour will pop all over the US, each featured act performing in pop-up, outdoor venues near train stops. Last year the tour featured Mumford and Sons, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show, and a music documentary directed by Emmett Malloy was made to honor the beautiful and unique concept of the Revival Tour.
Following Lioness: Hidden Treasures that was released after her death, it’s been confirmed by Amy Winehouse’s father that a second Amy Winehouse album is to come. After Amy Winehouse’s sudden passing one year ago, her father Mitch Winehouse collected the singer’s written materials and covers to be featured on Lioness.
With his book, Amy, My Daughter now on store shelves, Mitch Winehouse will release a second album of Amy’s work. He told BBC 6 Music News recently that more covers are to be expected, and they could even stretch on to a third album.
