Nothing to dread with Dredd?

Judge Dredd was a great comic book, and it’s too bad the first go around as a film wasn’t exactly a stellar effort.

But of course we’re in the age where movies are rebooted every few years, and now his time is coming again. This is something we at TG are definitely looking forward to, because yes, Dredd is indeed a great character, and he’s always deserved better.

Recently, there have been some reports that the new incarnation of Judge Dredd, simply titled Dredd, may have been in trouble. We discussed this a while back actually, but from what we can tell now, it seems all’s well that ends well with this one, or at least we’re hoping.

First off, the Huffington Post tells us the Dredd premiere got “solid notices from critics.” The film was premiered at Comic Con, which you’d think would be the friendliest harbor it could land, but believe me, if it didn’t deliver for the geeks, they’d be all over the ‘Net about it at the earliest opportunity.

Apparently Dredd’s also quite violent, which should definitely please fans out there who were afraid it would be a toned down, Hollywood version of the character. (One review noted it made Dirty Harry look like 12 Angry Men). And this should also put fans at ease: the helmet never comes off.

We’ll have to wait until September 12 to see if Dredd will be the law at the box office, but thankfully, from what we’ve seen so far, the film could indeed deliver and be a hell of a comeback for a comic character that definitely got short-shrift on the big screen.
