Bioshock Infinite delayed to 2013

Bioshock Infinite will not be showcased at E3 2012 in June, as its release date has been postponed by Irrational Games to February 26, 2013.

“When we announced the release date of BioShock Infinite in March, we felt pretty good about the timing. Since then, we’ve come to realize that some specific tweaks and improvements will make Infinite into something even more extraordinary. I won’t kid you: BioShock Infinite is a very big game, and we’re doing things that no one has ever done in a first-person shooter,” game designer Ken Levine explained in an official statement.

“We had a similar experience with the original BioShock, which was delayed several months as our original ship date drew near. Why? Because the Big Daddies weren’t the Big Daddies you’ve since come to know and love. Because Andrew Ryan’s golf club didn’t have exactly the right swing. Because Rapture needed one more coat of grimy Art Deco. The same principle now applies to BioShock Infinite.”

BioShock Infinite is the third game in the wildly popular franchise. Previously known as “Project Icarus,” Infinite is being developed for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.

Infinite isn’t considered a direct sequel or prequel to previous BioShock games, as it takes place in an earlier period and different setting (the steampunk air-city of Columbia), although it does feature similar FPS gameplay concepts and themes.

Like Rapture, the floating Columbia is considered a dystopia, with some labeling the fictional city as a cross between classic steampunk and Bespin of the Star Wars universe.
