It’s on practically every corner these days, even more than 7-11s, but it seems like you can’t walk two blocks without walking past a medical marijuana dispensary, at least in California.
Smoking pot, much like tattoos and piercing, has permeated so much of our culture, and it looks like pot humor is still going strong, with the upcoming comedy High School, starring Adrien Brody as an insane dope dealer, Psycho Ed, and there’s a great stoner character in Cabin in the Woods, Marty, played by Fran Kranz, who totally stole the show.
I definitely laughed at the High School trailer, and the Marty character had me laughing throughout Cabin in the Woods.
So now in honor of a story we just ran about ridiculous promotional items for movies, here’s another one that just came in. Movieline had a contest in conjunction with Cabin, and one of the prizes included a Cabin in the Woods bong in honor of the character Marty. I’m not sure about the legalities of awarding this as a prize, but I think as long as you don’t actually use it smoking dope it’s okay, you probably just need to be careful where you send it.
At first, you think the character of Marty in Cabin is going to be the first killed because he’s always high, but as the movie progresses, he turns out to be much smarter and more intuitive about what’s going on, one way Cabin definitely subverted the usual horror clichés. (A lot of stoners can be very philosophical and analytical when they’re high, which definitely worked in Marty’s favor).
As for using a bong as a movie tie-in, I also recall a metal band I liked back in the day, Sacred Reich, who also had promotional bongs for one of their albums with the band’s logo on the tube. At the time they were signed to Hollywood Records, a division of Disney, and I heard the people at the Mouse House weren’t thrilled about this.
I haven’t heard about any controversy over the Cabin in the Woods promo item, I’m sure whoever wins it will get the joke, and perhaps enjoy lighting up with it, as long as it doesn’t make you too paranoid in an empty house, or a cabin in the woods, late at night.
