Robocop reboot is on track

The RoboCop reboot is moving forward with Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) in the lead role with Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) directing.

As a fan of the original, Jose and Joel definitely have their work cut out for them, being that both director Paul Verhoeven and veteran lead actor Peter Weller brought a unique sci-fi classic to life with more intelligence and humor to the table than originally expected.

First off, he said he was "super stoked" to be in the new RoboCop,

"Especially with this director. Jose Padilha is a badass. I couldn't be happier because he's such a quality director."

As far as the OG RoboCop, "The first movie is one of my favorite movies," Kinnaman said.  I love it. Of course, Verhoeven has that very special tone, and it's not going to have that tone," Kinnaman continued. "It's a re-imagination of it. I was looking to do a big movie and to show I can carry a big movie." But Kinnaman also confirmed the new version will indeed have political satire in it as well.

The next RoboCop will start shooting in August, and although it's too early, Kinnaman is hoping the film will have an R rating.

"I can't imagine how RoboCop could be PG-13," he said. "That would be a huge mistake. If I have any say in it, I will fight very hard for it. It has to be violent."

The original RoboCop told the story of a Detroit police officer who, after a near-fatal shooting, is transformed into a cyborg enforcer tasked with stopping a vile corporation from destroying a dystopian Detroit.

The Robocop reboot is currently in pre-production, so a release date has not yet been set. The official, albeit brief synopsis is as follows:

"In a crime-ridden city, a terminally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg with submerged memories haunting him."
