New Lockout clip is in orbit

FilmDistrict and EuropaCorp have released a new clip for Lockout, an upcoming sci-fi thriller.

Often referred to as “Escape from New York in space,” Lockout tells the story of Snow, a loose-cannon government agent who is falsely convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage against the United States.

Much like Snake Plissken, Snow is offered his freedom in exchange for rescuing the president’s daughter – played by Maggie Grace – from an outer space prison taken over by violent inmates.

Unlike previous Lockout trailers, this clip seems intent on showing the comedic side of the movie, which could be a smart move, as it will undoubtedly help ease the pain of an obviously cliched plot and less than stellar dialogue.

I personally don’t expect Lockout to win any awards, but it is shaping up to look like a fun film. And hey, a modern take on Escape from New York could be sweet, and probably couldn’t be any worse than Escape from LA – gratuitous action sequences and all.

In addition to Pearce and Grace, Lockout stars Peter Stormare, Vincent Regan, Joseph Gilgun and Lennie James. The film was written – in part – by Luc Besson himself, and directed by James Mather and Stephen St. Ledger.

Lockout hits theaters on April 13, 2012.
