Star Trek game on track for ST2

As we recently reported on TG, the budgets for games - like Star Wars Old Republic - are getting close to rivaling the costs of movies themselves.

So now that Star Trek 2 is in production, there's of course a new Trek game in the works, one that will hopefully do the franchise justice.

Star Trek game on track for ST2Unsurprisingly, the title will coincide with the  release of the long-awaited JJ Abrams film (although it is launching a bit earlier in 2012), and is likely to spur some serious movie/game crossover action.

Digital Extremes (BioShock 2, Dark Sector, and The Darkness 2) is coding and designing the game, and Chris Pine (Kirk) and Zachary Quinto (Spock) are rumored to be involved in the project.

G4TV also reports that Team Abrams screenwriters Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Damon Lindelof are working on the game as well, alongside Marianne Kramczyk, the BAFTA award-winning author of the God of War series.

Game Director Steve Sinclair confirmed the Digital Extremes is working with the original ST/ST2 film team, which provides them with inside access to top-secret assets.

"Like one day, this encrypted hard drive just showed up at our offices, and it had all of the specs, blueprints, photos, CGI, and data on the Enterprise," said Sinclair. "So we're using the exact same hero ship that's in the movie in our game."

The game has been in development for a year and a half already, with an (initial) teaser trailer available below.

The graphics we've seen so far look pretty cool, and as G4TV wonders, "Could Star Trek shed the bad video game film adaptation stigma? Based on what we were shown, it sure looks like it."
