Star Trek 2 filming has begun

It took time to get the script and all the particulars together, but now it is indeed official: filming for Star Trek 2 has begun.

There’s no rest for those in Hollywood, forget that it’s a three day weekend for most of us, JJ Abrams and company are hard at work on the next entry of one of the most anticipated reinvented franchises in recent history.

As reported on Deadline, Paramount made the official announcement that principal photography kicked off January 12 in L.A. for a May 17, 2013 release.

Star Trek 2 brings back the new Enterprise crew of John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin, along with new cast members Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, and Robocop himself, Peter Weller.

There’s still no word who the villain in Trek 2 is, even though there was a lot of speculation it would be Khan when Benico Del Toro was up for the film, but official word on who the villain really is should be out soon, officially or unofficially. (Until then, expect a lot of speculation and geek guessing games on that peerless source of accurate information, the ‘Net).

The L.A. Times also reported, right before Trek 2 commenced shooting, that there was a cast reunion on the Sony lot. Bruce Greenwood and Peter Weller apparently talked about playing golf, and Greenwood added, “Usually when you work on a job and you love the experience, it’s rare that the film matches the experience. I was talking to Anton the other day and he was saying that they all got together on the bridge a few weeks ago and it was just like no time had passed at all. What’s great is the family. I know it’s an overused term and people roll their eyes but it really feels that way to me.’

Greenwood also mentioned the script is printed on red paper so it can’t be photocopied, and eveyone’s name is on their copies so leaks can be traced quickly.

“We’ve all signed these releases that are as long as your leg,” Greenwood continued, but he said the script is good. Screenwriter Damon Lindelof also told the Times via e-mail, “We are, at long last, ready to boldy go once again. I hope to God we don’t screw it up.”
