No alumni in Star Trek 2

While we still don’t know who the Star Trek 2 villain is, reports are now surfacing that there won’t be any original Star Trek alumni in the film.

Of course, it’s always nice to have alumni – especially when it comes to Star Trek – in the film as a nod of respect to past roles.

Still, this time it’s the whole new Trek gang, as least as far as anyone knows.

As Collider reports, having Leonard Nimoy, who is now retired from acting and from doing the Trek conventions, in the first Abrams Star Trek “was a nice way to bridge the gap” between the original and new Trek (and Spock).

“But there’s [really] no need to dwell on the past in future installments,” Collider continues. “We’re happy to follow the new cast in original, separate stories.”

Collider has also reported that although Star Trek 2 will be in 3D, Abrams plans to shoot the film in 2D, then convert it to 3D. Abrams may also shoot the film in IMAX, “my favorite format,” Abrams told MTV. “I’m a huge fan.”

And now that the Trek 2 release date’s been moved up to May 2013, a 3D conversion should work out well. “We now have the months to do it right,” Abrams continued. “Because it you rush it, it never looks good.”

As we reported previously on TG Daily, Star Trek 2 is set to begin principal photography on January 15, 2012, with a planned six month shoot slated to run until June. ST2 will hit theaters on May 17, 2013.
