The Wachowskis are back with Jupiter Ascending

The Matrix – written and directed by Larry (now Lana) & Andy Wachowski – hit theaters way back in 1999.

The trilogy has been mercilessly parodied to death (admittedly, not without some justification), but the franchise was definitely groundbreaking and set the special effects bar quite high for future films.

IMHO, most post-Matrix movies did quite well on the special effects front, but lagged far behind on story and personality.

Seriously, Keanu “I’m an FBI agent” Reeves aside, The Matrix had it all: ideology, humor, hacks, computers, hot geekettes, storyline, special effects and characters that were actually somewhat believable.

Yeah, I admit, some aspects of the trilogy were clichéd, but so what?

The Matrix was definitely ahead of its time, and for me, no sci-fi movie since has come close to emulating the intricate universe (Matrix and Zion) created by the Wachowskis.

But I digress.

In any case, the Wachowski siblings are now fully ensconced in the sci-fi universe with Jupiter Ascending, which, as Deadline reports, is a totally original creation by the duo.

Warner Bros. seems to moving ahead quite quickly on the project, as production is expected to begin this spring. The studio is also mulling over which A-list star will lead the cast, while attempting to keep the script and logline under tight wraps (we’ll see how long that lasts).

The Wachowskis will likely start shooting Jupiter Ascending after finishing Cloud Atlas. No word yet on what Jupiter Ascending is about, but Atlas is described as: “an epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution.”
