Report: Xbox 360 to get full stereoscopic 3D

A new report claims Microsoft will be unveiling full stereoscopic 3D capabilities for its flagship Xbox 360 gaming console at E3 in June.

According to EuroGamer, the stereo 3D support is expected to "work exactly" like the PS3's 3D effect, with full-on HDMI 1.4 stereoscopic 3D in the 1280x1470 twin 720p framebuffer configuration - rendering a cool 720p image per eye.

"They'd be mad not to do it, is all I can say," claimed an anonymous industry source.

Report: Xbox 360 to get stereoscopic 3D "The machine is not only very capable, it's more capable than the PlayStation 3 of doing stereo, assuming you don't have one of the old crappy ones with the composite leads,  assuming you have a HDMI Xbox. [Really], the bottleneck is more on the graphical throughput for rendering out in stereo."

As you may recall, a small number of Xbox 360 games currently support what Microsoft dubs "stereoscopic 3D," including Crytek's Crysis 2 and Treyarch's Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Yet, they all render via 3D techniques based on the (limited) principle of two distinct images jammed onto one 720p framebuffer.

However, the new firmware update is expected to offer 720p image per eye.

It should be noted that Microsoft has refused to either to confirm or deny the above-mentioned report, telling EuroGamer it "does not comment on rumor or speculation."
