Lenovo builds a game console

Lenovo is reportedly putting the finishing touches on an enigmatic video game console known as the "eBox."

According to the Wall Street Journal, the nascent console effort is part of the company's "broader push" to expand into new product categories such as tablet-style PCs and smartphones.

"Lenovo spokesman Jay Chen [confirmed] the company has established a game console company called Beijing eedoo Technology which will manage the development of an entertainment console [dubbed] eBox," wrote Loretta Chao of the WSJ.

Lenovo builds a game console"The console was first developed internally by Lenovo, [with] the company assembling a team to create a console prototype, then splitting it off as a separate company earlier this month."

Although details of the new console remain scarce, Chen did state that early eBox prototypes featured motion control technology similar to Microsoft's Kinect platform.

In addition, Chen noted the eBox would launch in China by the end of 2010 before hitting other markets.

As such, it is quite likely that the eBox is actually classified as a Plug'n'Play device, rather than a full-blown home console - which remains (technically) illegal in China.
