Blizzard has managed to sell over 1.5 million Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty copies in just 48 hours, with a staggering 1 million units offloaded during the first day of sales.

According to Blizzard co-founder and CEO Mike Morhaime, the highly-anticipated game is now the fastest-selling strategy title ever.

Starcraft 2"We're pleased that so many people around the world have already picked up a copy of the game, and we look forward to welcoming even more players to Battle.net in the weeks and months ahead," Morhaime explained in an official statement.

The sequel - which was released 12 years after Starcraft made its debut - has received mostly positive reviews, with an average score of 95 on Metacritic.

So how does Starcraft II compare to Modern Warfare 2 - which sold almost 5 million units on its first day?

Well, Kris Pigna of 1UP explains that Starcraft II was not a cross-platform release - as opposed to its popular MW2 counterpart.

"Sure, Modern Warfare 2's first-day sales of 4.7 million units (3.8 million in the US alone) last year still dwarfs StarCraft 2's," wrote Pigna.

"But consider that 1) Modern Warfare 2 was released on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, and 2) StarCraft 2 is, again, a real-time strategy game - a genre that hasn't ever exactly penetrated the zeitgeist of modern gaming the same way first-person shooters did."
