Sony says stereoscopic 3D is the future of gaming

A Sony spokesperson has stated that 3D stereoscopic gaming will play a "crucial" role in determining the company's future.

"3D gaming is very important to us and we see this as a significant long term strategy," Simon Benson, senior development manager on the company's Stereoscopic 3D Team, told MCV.

"The fact that we have a team entirely dedicated to stereoscopic 3D gaming shows that we are taking this very seriously and we aim to lead the way wherever we can."

According to Benson, stereoscopic 3D is "possibly going to be the biggest revolution" in gaming for many years to come.

"If you think that the movie Avatar revolutionized cinema, just wait to see what 3D games will do," added Benson.

Indeed, as TG Daily previously reported, an Insight Media analyst recently predicted that video game studios will likely release up to 25 stereoscopic 3D console titles in 2010, with some 35-50 games expected by 2011.

Meanwhile, Nvidia spokesperson Bryan Del Rizzo told TG Daily that 3D as a medium will become "all pervasive."

"We think it is the future of entertainment. But it is obvious that expectations for 3D radically changed after James Cameron upped the ante with Avatar. So, now the industry has to get to the point where both hardware and content are capable of delivering a comparable experience at home," said Del Rizzo.

"We at Nvidia know the holy grail of 3D entertainment is affordable price points and a game or movie that makes the viewer/player sit up and truly say 'wow.'

"And that is why we are working with developers to help achieve that goal. In essence, we want people to get excited about 3D because it is better, not different. And they are, because it definitely is, right now in 2010."
