The Hubble Space Telescope is the unlikely star of a new Imax film, eclipsing even its narrator, Leonardo DiCaprio.
In conjunction with NASA and Warner Bros, the Imax Space team has created Hubble 3D, which opens on Friday in 40 Imax theaters across the US.
"Through the power of Imax 3D, Hubble 3D will enable movie-goers to journey through distant galaxies to explore the grandeur and mysteries of our celestial surroundings, and accompany spacewalking astronauts as they attempt the most difficult and important talks in NASA's hstory," say its makers.
"The film will offer an inspiring and unique look into the Hubble Space Telescope's legacy and highlight its profound impact on the way we view the universe and ourselves."
Directed by Toni Myers, the movie shows Shuttle astronauts working to add new instruments and make repairs on the telescope last May. But it also takes viewers on a warp-speed ride through the universe, past Sirius and on to Orion's Belt.
Using Hubble's observations and computer visualization, it travels on to the Andromeda galaxy and beyond, taking in 2,000 galaxies and a black hole on the way.
