HBO has posted a short animated film which offers up a bit of background information on The Wall.

The Blu-ray release of Game of Thrones season 2 will include, among other features, a series of short animated pieces which detail some aspects of the history of the Seven Kingdoms, which readers of the books may be familiar with, but which do not really come up in the show due to time constraints.

In promotion of the upcoming release, HBO has posted one of the videos, titled simply The Nights Watch, which offers a glimpse into the history of the interaction between the Watch and the Free-folk from the perspective of those who live north of the wall, where there is no rule or law of the kingdoms. It is voiced by Rose Leslie, who plays Ygritte on the show.

Below is the list of what animated clips will be on the Blu-Ray set, each narrated, in-character, by actors from the show:

Greyjoy Rebellion - three separate tellings by Robb Stark (Richard Madden), Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) and Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane)

Robert’s Rebellion - four separate tellings by Stannis Baratheon, Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham), Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer), and Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley)

House Tyrell - narrated by Margaery Tyrell

House Greyjoy - narrated by Theon and Yara Greyjoy (Gemma Whelan)

House Clegane - narrated by Sandor Clegane (Rory McCann)

The Free Folk - narrated by Ygritte (Rose Leslie)

The Night’s Watch - narrated by Ygritte

Dragonstone - narrated by Stannis Baratheon

Harrenhal - narrated by Catelyn Stark

The Free Cities - narrated by Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen)

Qarth - narrated by Xaro Xhoan Daxos (Nonso Anozie)

The Drowned God - narrated by Yara Greyjoy

The Alchemist Guild - narrated by Wisdom Hallyne (Roy Dotrice)

The Warlocks - narrated by Xaro Xhoan Daxos

Even if you’ve already seen the episodes and have little desire to watch them again, these animated shorts alone are good reson to check out the Blu-ray release, which will hit shelves on February 19, 2013.

Season three of Game of Thrones, which covers the events of the first half of the third novel of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series kicks off Sunday March 30, 2013 on HBO.
