Mad Max: Fury Road raises a dust cloud
Mad Max is on its way back to us across the dusty roads of South Africa.
Delayed by good weather of all things, the new Mad Max film has been a long time coming, but production is finishing up in Nambia, South Africa, the sparsely populated area which was finally chosen to shoot the film in, when the original Australian location got over-run with foliage.
Fury Road is not a reboot or adaptation; it’s a new entry in the story-line, which continues the tale following the events of Beyond Thunderdome. Max has joined a group of survivors attempting to escape from the wastelands to find a better home. A caravan of odd post-apocalyptic vehicles cross the desert together, getting in trouble along the way.
This fan-shot video offers us a pretty sweet look at some of the vehicles in the film.
It looks like a strong focus has been placed on making these transports as eclectic as possible, while maintaining the flavor of the Mad Max world we were introduced to so long ago. It will be interesting to see how these vehicles play into the other effects of the film, but mostly it will be fun to see a take on the Mad Max setting that uses a modern budget. The original film’s simplistic effects and designs actually standup remarkably well, even if the films’ plot and pacing do not.
There is no official trailers or synopses or even posters out yet, but when filming concluded last month, Director George Miller offered up a brief, unofficial synopsis in the press release:
Mad Max is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa. This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived.
Mad Max: Fury Road stars Tom Hardy in the role of Max alongside Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa. No release date has yet been announced. It’s likely too late to squeeze the film into the end of the 2013 blockbuster season at this point, and I don’t think they’d want this to be a winter release, so I expect it to release in the early part of the 2014 Blockbuster season, perhaps in May. We'll likely see our first teaser in the fall.
