Zynga kills off 11 games

As part of cost-cutting measures announced in November, Zynga has pulled the plug on 11 games, including PetVille and Mafia Wars 2.

The company says it plans to focus its resources on its more successful games, and is either shutting down or stopping accepting players for the rest.

Vampire Wars, Treasure Isle and FishVille were shut down on December 5, with Montopia following on December 21 and PetVille and Mafia Wars 2 disappearing yesterday. Mafia Wars Shakedown, ForestVille, Mojitomo and Word Scramble Challenge have also been pulled from app stores. Indiana Jones Adventure World has been closed for new players, and will shut down altogether on January 14.

The company is offering a sop to players who have invested a lot of time and money in their games.

"We appreciate your participation in PetVille as it helped make the game a fun place to meet and war with friends," it says.

"As a loyal PetVille player, you are eligible for a one-time, complimentary bonus package in one of either Castleville, or Chefville, or Farmville 2, or Mafia Wars or Yoville."

Players of other games, such as  Mafia Wars Shakedown, are being told to contact Zynga Customer Support for possible compensation.

But this isn't nearly enough for many users. "My autistic son and I had played Petville together for two years. It was something we could do together, and made us very happy," says one. "I wish you 'people' could have seen the streams of tears running down both our faces as we played our last session."

The move comes as part of a series of cost-cutting emasures that have included over 100 layoffs and office closures. Nevertheless, the company's shares are trading at around a quarter of the $10 they were worth at the time of the company's IPO last year.
