Super Smash Bros on Wii U "several years" away

Don't get too excited over Nintendo's confirmation that a Super Smash Bros game was in the works for Wii U.

There's a long wait ahead before that announcement will actually translate into a product. Masahiro Sakurai, the man in charge of Super Smash Bros, has revealed the game won't be ready for "several years."

Sakurai, who has a strong following in the Nintendo community, writes a weekly column for the popular Japanese video game magazine Famitsu.

According to a translation from 1up.com, in his most recent column he writes, "I'm not sure it's the smartest thing to make gamers wait for several years, but the early announcement was made chiefly in order to attract new team members."

Sakurai currently has a much more imminent project in his workload - Kid Icarus: Uprising for the 3DS.

Super Smash Bros, which lets players engage in highly stylized and addicting fights with all of their favorite characters from Nintendo and third-party franchises, is itself one of Nintendo's most powerful franchises.

The last iteration, Super Smash Bros Brawl, remains one of the best-selling titles on the Wii, so Nintendo is surely in no rush to get a new one out in the market.

Before the Wii U announcement, there were rumblings about a 3DS Super Smash Bros title. The fate of that potential project remains unclear.
