Sony more obsessed with 3D than ever
A lot of companies have 3D fever these days, but few can match the ferver and sheer breadth of 3D material available from Sony at this year's CES expo.
The company's big press conference was yesterday, and there was even more of a focus on 3D than last year, as virtually every division in the company turns to the new format.
"2011 begins the next phase of our 3D strategy, a year in which 3D becomes personal," said Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer, as quoted by Reuters.
Here's just a sampling of all the different kinds of 3D going on within the Sony corporation:
- More Sony Pictures films in 3D, like The Green Hornet
- A 24-hour 3D TV channel in partnership with Discovery and Imax
- Higher volume of PS3 games in 3D
- 3D cameras and camcorders
- Additional 3D TV models
- 3D Blu-ray players
Stringer expects Sony content to be connected to more than 50 million TVs in the US alone, whether it's an Internet-connected Sony TV or a PS3/Blu-ray player connected to a third-party TV. That's a lot of people, so if just a couple percent of those turn to 3D content, it would be worth it.
Some companies are changing their 3D strategies or starting to take a back seat after 2010 was a lackluster year for the new formats, but Sony is going full steam ahead.
