Plants vs. Zombies lands iPhone game sales record

With over 300,000 copies of the cutesy-gory zombie-killing game sold in just nine days, Plants vs. Zombies has become the fastest-selling product in the history of the iPhone App Store. For 8 days in a row following its launch, it was ranked as the top-selling game.

Plants vs. Zombies is a unique take on the huge zombie craze by moving away from the gritty gore and instead creating a really cartoony look and feel. The aim is to set up flowers in a tower defense style that shoot weapons at incoming zombies.

The game was first teased by a humorous music video, which quickly became viral on YouTube. The game was originally released on the PC in May of last year. The iPhone version becomes the only iPhone game to gross a million dollars in less than 10 days.

"There's always a concern when bringing a computer game to a mobile, pocket-sized device that something will get lost in the process, but in this case the overwhelming consensus is that Plants vs. Zombies is even more fun on the smaller touch screen," said PopCap director of mobile business development, Andrew Stein.

The game's publisher PopCap also announced today that another of its titles, Bejeweled 2, has eclipsed sales of over 3 million units, the first iPhone game to do so.

PopCap, a privately-held company based in Seattle, is one of the top publishers for casual games that appear on virtually every device (from PDAs to the Xbox 360). Its library includes casual classics like Bejeweled, Peggle, and Zuma.
