The next installment of The Hobbit, The Desolation of Smaug, is coming on December 13, and the third and final Hobbit installment will be released in 2014. What could possibly be next for Peter Jackson? A ten-movie adaptation of War and Peace?
Thor may not be the most popular Marvel character, but as part of the Avengers ensemble he should do very well when his next movie, Thor: The Dark World, is unleashed on November 8. Now the reviews are in, and the verdict is…
The Bone Season is the latest dystopian young adult novel that publishers have hoped will be the next Harry Potter. The Bone Season was written by Samantha Shannon, who got big bucks to write it while she was attending Oxford. (Actually, she’s still in Oxford and is all of 21 years old.)
We understand that Warner Brothers wants to keep the Batman and Harry Potter franchises going as long as they can, but what about Wonder Woman? A potential Wonder Woman movie’s been in the works for decades now, and at one point Joss Whedon was going to direct. There was also the announcement of Amazon, an origin story TV series, but there hasn’t been any news on that lately.
The news that Stephen Lang, who played Marine Colonel Quaritch in the first Avatar movie, is returning for the sequels is surprising, for obvious reasons: He got killed him in the first one. Yet if you want a character to return, there’s almost always a way, and Lang is indeed coming back.
Doctor Who is hitting its 50th anniversary on November 23, and fans of the good doctor must be counting down everywhere. Doctor Who is the longest running sci-fi series in TV history, and in Europe the doctor’s anniversary will have one special touch it won’t have in the States.
Revolution, the NBC series where the world loses all power, was a ratings powerhouse when it debuted this year, and one of the biggest hits the network has had in years. But after a hiatus, the show’s ratings have taken a dive, and we at TGD are definitely watching to see if it can recover.
Sure Orson Scott Card, the author of Ender’s Game, has been shooting his mouth off like a fool lately. But Ender’s Game is one of the most beloved novels in sci-fi, and fans have been salivating for the movie adaptation for years.
So the Sam Raimi classic Evil Dead finally got its inevitable remake, and surprisingly it got decent reviews, and more than decent box office. But there’s always been the possibility Sam and the gang could make one more authentic Evil Dead movie, and he’s certainly got the box office clout to make it happen.
Back in the eighties, Tim Burton had three big hit movies that rocketed him onto the Hollywood A-list: Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, and of course, Batman. There’s been talk of a sequel to Beetlejuice for decades, and the rumors have been swirling again this summer, so could another Beetlejuice actually get made one of these days?
When we wait to see what shows are top of the ratings heap these days, we usually have to wait an extra day. The reason is many people like to watch shows later, via DVR.
These days, there’s only so many animation companies out there, because it’s very hard to compete with Disney and Pixar. But back in the day, there were a number of cool companies that made cartoons. Not only did Hanna-Barbera rule Saturday morning TV, but you also had the classic Warner Brothers re-runs, and the terrific cartoons of Filmation.
The next installment in Thor, Thor: the Dark World, should end up doing very well considering he’s part of the Avengers team. While fans are salivating for Avengers 2, which is due in 2015, they had Iron Man 3 this summer to keep them satisfied for a while, and Thor should also help bridge the gap nicely as well.
With its upcoming sequels, Avatar has the potential to become the biggest sci-fi franchise since Star Wars. There will be three more Avatar films, and now the next installment has a potential starting time.
With so many remakes and reboots, it’s wonderful to see an actual original movie doing so well. In fact, Gravity is the #1 movie in the country for three weeks now, and it has stood its ground very easily against the remake of Carrie, and the Julian Assange biopic The Fifth Estate, which was a big flop.
Along with Star Wars, Avengers 2, and Batman Vs Superman, another big franchise coming in the summer of 2015 will be the fifth Terminator movie, which is currently slated for a July 1, 2015 release.
In the video game Deus Ex - Human Revolution, Sarif Industries, a fictitious company, makes a prosthetic device with great potential. The Sun newspaper in Britain thought so, too, failing to realize that it wasn't, in fact, real.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty may be a work of art or a classic short story. But, Ben Stiller is treating it like a Michael Bay treatment in this trailer for his upcoming remake of the Danny Kaye movie. Neither film has anything to do with James Thurber's original short story as much as they like to think, but it doesn't hurt to pretend that they do.
We’re still awaiting the verdict on how Pacific Rim will do on home video, and whether this will help the movie finally make some money. There’s still hope there will eventually be a sequel, and it would be great to see Pacific Rim become a film series, even though giant robots beating the crap out of giant monsters is not a cheap proposition.
If there’s anything I really love about going to the movies, it’s the popcorn. No matter what brand I try elsewhere, I have yet to find any that replicates the kind I eat in the theaters. (BTW, for whatever it’s worth, I love it without butter, straight no chaser.)
