This has not been a great couple of years for Sony. We had the rootkit catastrophe late last year and the Sony Battery disaster this year. A number of us have been increasingly concerned that the Playstation 3 would be a stillborn and even the PSP didn't start particularly well. However things can change: It looks like Sony has hit the bottom and, and with the exception of batteries (which may be a dead division), may be on the way back up.

Culver City (CA) - Microsoft's Zune media player is now joining the pre-order madness started by the Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation 3. EB Games has started selling reservations for the upcoming player that will ship on November 14, 2006 for $250. You can view the pre-order page here.
Microsoft has been tight-lipped about the functionality of an external HD DVD drive, which the company will be releasing for its Xbox 360 gaming console.

Valve today said that it now offers its Source game engine as a middleware technology for developers who are working on games for Microsoft's Xbox 360 console.
A US judge has rejected Jack Thompson's bid to ban the "Bully" video game made by Take-Two. Judge Ronald Friedman has ruled that the game is not a public nuisance and will allow it to be sold in Florida.
Last week, the judge Friedman ordered Take-Two to demonstrate Bully to help him make a decision. After viewing the game, Friedman said the game shows less violence that what is seen on a typical night of television.
Grapevine (TX) - GameStop today announced that it officially stopped taking pre-orders for the Wii by the end of Friday, 13 October, the day pre-orders first became available.

New York City recently wrapped up official celebrations of the upcoming Final Fantasy XII game. The city's tourism organization declared October 11th, 2006 to be Final Fantasy XII day and invited fans to their Times Square offices for a party and a question and answer session with Final Fantasy producers.
