Twitter offers musicians early access to its #music app

Twitter apparently has its very own music app in the works. Although it remains unclear when the platform will go live for the masses, the site has already granted early access to a number of prominent musicians.

Yes, several tweets have turned up this week, teasing and talking about how sweet the app is without, unfortunately, providing any concrete details about the service or how it works.

The app – aptly dubbed “Twitter #music” – reportedly pulls tracks from numerous music services such as Rdio, Spotify, YouTube, Vevo, SoundCloud, and iTunes (which hit 25 billion downloads this year). Some of the artists who have already tweeted about the new #music application include Nikki Sixx, Moby, Alt-J, and Ne-Yo. American Idol host Ryan Seacrest has also been talking up the application.

Then again, it remains unclear just how much of the chatter is genuine praise, as some of the excited tweets are undoubtedly part of an extensive paid marketing camapaign.

Celebrities certainly aren’t beyond talking up something to make a payday.

So far, there’s no indication of when the new Twitter music service will be made available to the general public. Rumors had previously made the rounds that the platform might launch alongside the Coachella music festival, which never happened. However, the real question, at least in my mind is: do we really need yet another music sharing service?
