Dystopian Distance racing game hits Kickstarter

Racing games have been around for years now and have certainly come a very long way since the early CGA days of Test Drive.

Some of my personal favorites include the Need for Speed franchise and games like Rush 2049 and Pole Position. However, Distance – a new game on Kickstarter – promises t0 redefine the genre as well as our general expectations.

The game is said to be a spiritual successor to the award-winning game called Nitronic Rush – and described as a combination of Trials Evolution + Rush 2049 + Halo + Tron. Frankly, I see a lot of Tron, with the the vehicles equipped with sleek stripes of light. Racing action takes place in a crumbling dystopian city – with the vehicles boasting the ability to jump, rotate and fly.

The official Kickstarter description reads as follows: “Distance is a PC/Mac survival racing game that combines the intense action of arcade racing with the exploration of an atmospheric world. You control a unique car that allows you to boost, jump, rotate, and even fly through a chaotic and twisted city. The world has a mysterious history, and as you explore you’ll be able to uncover pieces of its past.

“The roads are treacherous and unpredictable with obstacles around every corner. Instead of doing laps on a loop, you’ll be trying to survive to the end in the quickest time. Since your car has several abilities, it allows you to not only drive fast on the track but also upside down and on buildings and walls! You can also fly to discover new shortcuts and paths.”

The finished game will be offered to both PC and Mac gamers. A pledge of $15 or more gets you access to the beta version of the game, along with a copy of the title when it officially launches. A pledge of $25 or more will get you the game, access to the beta, and a soundtrack. The project is seeking $125,000 and has thus far raised $$38,061. The project has 21 days to go.
