The War Z dead forfeit their gear

Gamers all over the world are stoked for a slew of upcoming zombie video games,  including the stand alone DayZ and The War Z.

It was recently confirmed that players of DayZ will lose all their gear when they are overrun by the undead. War Z devs are implementing a similar feature, but are taking the concept even further.

Indeed, the world of War Z will feature a real-money auction house where players can buy goods with US dollars to help them move ahead in the game.

As noted above, Hammerpoint Interactive has confirmed that players in normal or hard-core mode who die lose everything in their backpacks, including items they paid real money for.

I don’t know the rest of you, but I think forfeiting (free) items found in the game world is one thing. However, taking away gear players actually paid real money for is something completely different.

This might as well be an annuity for people who sell items frequently on the games real-money auction house, and the developer who will presumably take a cut from each item sold at auction.

“Yes, you’ll lose what you have in your backpack when you die – both in Normal and Hardcore modes. And yes, if you bought something using real money, you’ll lose that item as well,” Hammerpoint Interactive PR rep Alex Josef recently told GamingBlend.

“This is a price you’ll have to pay. We’ve discussed that a lot and at the end decided that this will provide a pretty good incentive for players to either be extra cautious while playing, or just not spend too much money in the game and, instead, try to procure all items by finding them in the game world.”

I’m really not sure I agree with this new model. What do you think?
