6.5 million Playstation devices sold during holidays

Sony is bragging about its strong holiday season, saying more than 6.5 million “Playstation” systems were sold during the end of 2011.

Specifically, that number includes the PS2, PS3, PSP, and the Playstation Vita. Here’s the complete breakdown:

PS2 – 500,000

PS Vita – 500,000

PSP  – 1.6 million

PS3 – 3.9 million

It’s interesting to see how strong the PS2 continues to be, more than a decade after it was first released. Sony pioneered the “10-year life cycle” model with the PS2 and it seems to have taken that mindset to the next level with the PS3.

PS3 sales have swelled long after the console launched in 2006, so when the Wii was starting to mature and decline in sales, the PS3 has been poised to leapfrog ahead.

The Playstation Vita, of course, was only released in Asia and just came out in the middle of December, so that number will climb significantly as the new year progresses, especially after it is released in the US next month.
