Game of Thrones season 3 featurette builds the courtyard
HBO has released a new featurette for its upcoming season of the dark fantasy serial.
Called Vlog #1, implying that there will be more such videos, the short piece showcases the set building for a few scenes that will take place in a part of the Red Keep that we haven't seen before, a meeting room off an attractive courtyard. There is also footage of interviews with a number of artists who work on the look of the show - discussing what they're working on and how much freedom they have in terms of creation.
Game of Thrones is one of the best shows on television these days. HBO has shifted a lot of resources into the show, and with great performances, a huge production budget, and skilled directing, not to mention the fantastic world-building in the source material, it quickly became, and has remained, a favorite of fantasy fans.
The set design and building is a major component of what makes the show work, as that's what we have to look at while the stories are going on in the foreground, and if it didn't look right, the whole show would be wrong. So far, the show has managed to look and feel authentic in nearly every scene (there were a couple scenes in Qarth last season that felt a bit off to me).
The third season is coming up this spring. There will be major changes to the world and the plot in this season as the focus of the conflict shifts dramatically. Perhaps this excitement explains why books one and two of George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series only merited about a season apiece, and it will take two seasons, at least, to get through book three.
The third season of Game of Thrones is currently in production and will begin airing on March 31st, 2013 on HBO.
